In Part 1 of the application note, Shimadzu GCMS-QP2020 NX was used to provide sensitive, precise, and robust detection of EG and DEG in medicinal syrup in two different sample matrices with minimal sample preparation, as per the Indonesian BPOM method. The analysis was demonstrated using the Fast Automated Scan/SIM Type (FASST) mode, which enables consecutive operation of scan mode and selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode for accurate qualification and quantitation within a single injection.

In Part 2 of the application note, the analysis method was slightly modified using a matrix-matched calibration plot to reduce the matrix effect that previously impacted the %Recovery of the method. This modification greatly enhances the method’s selectivity, enabling accurate quantitation of EG and DEG in the presence of complex sample matrices. The rest of the setup remains unchanged, using Shimadzu GCMS-QP2020 NX and Fast Automated Scan/SIM Type (FASST) mode. With the method developed, it is suitable to meet the stringent requirements of relevant authorities, testing labs, or pharmaceutical quality control.
EG DEG Analyzer: Ethylene Glycol and Diethylene Glycol Analysis in Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, and Sorbitol Solution using BrevisTM GC as per USP Monographs
When analyzing EG and DEG impurities in pharmaceutical excipients like glycerin, propylene glycol, and sorbitol solution, gas chromatograph with FID (GC-FID) is the preferred chromatographic system as per USP monographs.
