Analysis of the Failure Behavior of Fiber Reinforced Plastics using High-Speed Compression Testing

The static mechanical properties and strain rate dependence of fiber reinforced plastics can vary depending on whether the external force applied to the material is in the tensile or compressive direction. As an example of simulation using compressive properties, we introduce a comparison between the measurement results for a high-speed compression test on GFRP and the simulation results that take into consideration the structure of the measurement system.

By observing the actual behavior, feedback can be provided for the simulation mode!!

  • High-speed compression testing up to 10 m/sec is possible. Shimadzu’s proprietary impact protection function protects the instrument from shocks after the impact has been applied to the test sample. Impact vibrations are minimized to enable high-accuracy, high-speed compression tests.
  • The details of failure behavior can be observed using a high-speed camera with a high time resolution of up to 10 Mfps, further improving data reliability.
