Shimadzu’s New Analytical Factory In India Set To Begin Operations In 2027

As Shimadzu Corporation commemorates its 150th anniversary, the company celebrates a historic legacy of innovation and Excellence in Science, underscoring our unwavering commitment to Contributing to Society Through Science and Technology. 

Marking this significant milestone, Shimadzu has announced an exciting new chapter in its legacy—a state-of-the-art analytical factory in Karnataka, India. Slated to begin operations in spring 2027, Shimadzu Manufacturing India Private Limited (SMI) represents a strategic move to deepen Shimadzu's presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.  

India, home to the world’s largest population, is projected to continue growing demographically until 2060. Its GDP is anticipated to become the third-largest globally by 2027 (currently fifth-largest), particularly driven by its healthcare, green technology, and materials industries, which are concurrently the key focus areas for Shimadzu. Additionally, India is set to establish itself as a major producer of generic drugs, with domestic production of electric vehicles (EVs) and semiconductors also expected to advance. 

At present, there are two manufacturing facilities in the Asia-Pacific region: Shimadzu Manufacturing Asia Sdn. Bhd. (SMA) and Shimadzu Philippines Manufacturing Inc. (SPM). SMA focuses on producing key analytical instruments, including liquid chromatographs (LC), gas chromatographs (GC), and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometers (UV). Meanwhile, SPM specializes in electronic balances and printed circuit board assembly (PCBA). 

The establishment of the third facility, SMI, is set to significantly enhance the company’s supply chain. For the very first time, Shimadzu’s analytical mass spectrometers (MS) will be manufactured in Asia Pacific region by SMI. 

SMI will manufacture a range of products, including LC, GC, UV, LC-MS and GC-MS. Looking ahead, Shimadzu plans to broaden its manufacturing scope to encompass medical and industrial equipment.
